Baby Library

EN: Many years ago, when my family still lived in Ukraine, my father had a side gig buying and selling books. Back then, it was still the Soviet Union where it was impossible to procure anything - from toilet paper to literature. So my father smuggled, bought, traded and sold anything from foreign classics to kids encyclopedias. Because of this, our house was always populated with books. Somehow, he managed to get his hands on these beautiful cherry wood shelves and they stood tall throughout our tiny apartment. The older I grew, the higher were the shelves I was able to reach.

Since we only had four channels on TV, books were far more entertaining for me. I would crawl up to the shelved, pick out the prettiest looking volume and flip through it looking at pictures. There were art journals with gorgeous reproductions, books on chemistry and physics explaining how things worked and countless geography editions with maps and pictures of cities I didn't even know I'll get to visit some day. All of these could occupy me for hours. Then, I learned to read when I was four and haven't stopped since. My world has changed and my imagination would take me on adventures with every book I read. Sci Fi, historical novels, classics - I was in love with it all. I couldn't wait for evening time to come fast enough so I could fall asleep with my book after all my chores and homework.

When we left Ukraine for Israel, the books went with us, all one and a half tons of them. Little did we know that only a year later we will be moving again, to the United States, and all our books will have to stay behind. We only got to bring a few volumes with us to New York. I treasure those dearly, but for the longest time my apartment looked bare to me without any bookshelves.

When I started earning my own income, I decided to repopulate my life with books. Slowly but surely, I started growing a library again, this time in both English and Russian. This week I came to a conclusion that my bookshelf is stuffed to the brim, so I ordered a new one! Words can't describe how proud and nostalgic I felt when I put it together and stuffed it with my books. It took so many years to accumulate and read all these volumes and each one is dear to me in its own way.

When I found out I was expecting a baby, guess what I started buying?) The first book I bought was "What to Expect When You Are Expecting" because it was the title I was familiar with. It turned out to be not the best read on pregnancy, as it mostly feeds your anxiety with a million "what if" scenarios of everything that can go wrong. However, it is very informative - breaking down what your body and baby goes through week by week, although most of the information it contains can be accessed through the books app, for free.

A few months ago I started buying first books for the baby. Although he will be too tiny to make out anything they say, I want him to grow up around literature the same way I did. It's something that's so very near and dear to my heart and I cannot wait to share my favorite titles with my son!

EN: The picture above is my little baby book shelf. I am trying to read mostly in English - so that I can share what I learn with my husband. I am also selecting literature as diverse as possible so I can learn from different cultures and schools of thought. One of my favorite reads so far is "How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm", written by a Chinese American author who currently lives in Argentina. The books covers different topics from sleep to potty training from the perspective of several cultures around the world - Western, Chinese, African, Middle Eastern and many more. It sums up my approach to parenting perfectly - take the best of everything the world has to offer.
One of the most helpful and practical books I've read was given to me by my neighbor - called Baby 411, which covers the baby's first year of life in great detail - from birth, to hygiene, to feeding to immunization and first aid. It really taught me a lot and I highly recommend it.
The closer we are getting to our due date, the more anxious I get. It's not so much the labor that worries me, but everything that comes after. I am trembling at the thought of the first time me and Baby are home alone and a slight panicky voice in my head whispers - "Now What??!!" However, the more I read and learn about babies, the calmer I feel. I really hope all this information will prepare me for what's coming, because we are almost there!
Here is what's been on my reading list over the last few months:

1. Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp
2. Maria Montessori
3. French Parents Don't Give In & French Children Don't Throw Food (on loan at my mom's :) by Pamela Druckerman
4. Baby Owner's Manual by Louis Borgenicht M.D. and Joe Borgenicht
5. How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm by Mei-Ling Hopgood
6. How Children Succeed by Paul Tough
7. What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkoff
8. The Everything Father-To-Be Book by Kevin Nelson & Pregnancy Sucks For Men by Joanne Kimes (my husband's reading list ;)
9. Yoga for Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond by Francoise Barbira Freedman
10. Baby 411 by Denise Fields and Ari Brown (new edition now available)

Welcome to the World from National Geographic by Marfe Ferguson Delano

A precious memory book about baby's first milestones with gorgeous photos. I'm sure the baby will love flipping through it and reading about himself when he gets older!

Foam Books: Soft Shapes

Some of the books I got for Baby to learn about the world. I love the Soft Shapes series with foam pages which are easy for baby to flip through and colorful images to capture his attention.

I Can Eat a Rainbow by Annabel Karmel

A fun way for baby to learn how to eat healthy.

Trace and Flip Fun!

These books are a fantastic idea - they have letters and numbers carved out in the boardbook, which allows the baby to trace them with his finger preparing him to learning how to write!

Black and White by Tana Hoban

First time I saw black and white baby books I thought it was a bit creepy. However, now I know the reason behind them - when babies are born they have 20/200 vision and can't really make out colors. However, they can notice things that are black and white and they don't irritate their eyes like colors do, hence the black and white books. They have no words, just pictures of shapes like bottles, bananas, keys, cats and so on. So this here will be our son's very first book!

One of my favorite finds for baby's library is this classic story by Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. My grandmother used to read this story to me when I was little and it was my favorite. I found a pretty accurate English translation of it which not only preserved the original story line but also keeps up with the same beat and flow of Pushkin's poetry. I can't wait to read it to our son!
