A few days ago, I came into my son's room in the morning and said "Hi, Baby!", as I always do. T

o which he replied - "No Baby. BOY." 

Well, how did that happen?!! 

Nicky is clearly no longer a baby, yet nowhere near the grown and independent person that he wants to be. Each day he is conquering new skills (like putting on his jacket or drawing a straight line) while constantly testing his boundaries. And although it can be difficult for all parties involved (hello, temper tantrums), it is amazing to teach him and watch him learn.

However, one thing I have figured out about toddlers is that you have to have them constantly engaged in something, especially at home. Otherwise, they start coming up with their own activities and that can turn into a mess of cosmic proportions. Luckily, there are so many toys available for this age group, so I picked out some of our current favorites to share with you.

Toddler at the Beach

The summer is now in full bloom and the water is finally starting to warm up here in New York. Nicky and I have been hitting the beach several times a week and after somewhat of a rough start, he is really starting to love it! It took some time getting used to the ocean because it is big, it is cold and it is very different from the warm cozy bathtub he is used to splashing in. We took it slow, at first just wetting out feet while playing soccer, then dipping our legs while being held by mommy, then jumping in together and, finally, running in full speed and plopping down into the water! I am so excited that Nicky is enjoying himself and am looking forward to teaching him how to swim soon!

However, a trip to the beach can be challenging when bringing a toddler. The sun, the sand, the water can all be unpredictable and so can your little one. Here are a few tips to make the time by the water pleasant for your whole family:

When Nicky was a newborn, I couldn't wait till he gets older and learns to hold thing in his hands so that we can play with the myriad of toys I began to accumulate for him since I found out I was pregnant. It took a long time coming, but after he turned one the real fun started. Here are some of our current favorite toys at 16 months:

How to Get Daddy to Watch the Baby

Sometimes mommy needs some time off. Spending an entire day catering to other people's needs (in particularly short, whiny people known as children) can blow the circuits of the most sane and patient one of us. Just like overtired children, overtired mommies can have tamper tantrums and it can be a terrifying sight. So, for the sake of everyone's well-being, it is important for mommy to have some time to herself once in a while.

Enters Daddy. He is seen as the light in the end of the tunnel, the knight in shining armor meant to save the damsel in distress from the little three foot tall monsters (aka children) and set her free. She rushes to him when he opens the door with the baby in her arms and panic and relieve in her eyes.

And what does the knight do?
He retires to the bathroom for 45 minutes and the damsel is left to save herself...

You may think it's dad's responsibility to be their for his kids and all duties at home should be shared 50/50. But let's be honest, that's not always the case, especially when it comes to smaller children. It is harder for men to connect with a baby because they simply don't have the same chemistry we do.

So how do you get Daddy to take the baby off your hands? Let's try to figure it out:

A Toddler on a Train

EN: Few weeks ago I took my son on a trip to the City. To make it more adventurous, we took the train and the Staten Island Ferry. This commute took a little over an hour each way. I was nervous going so far away from home on my own because I didn't know how Nicky would handle it, so I took all the steps possible to prepare. Despite my worries, it turned out to be a great time for both of us. Nicky loved the train ride, looked out at the water and the sunset on the ferry and ran about all excited once we got to Battery Park downtown. Here is how I prepped for the trip:

RU: В прошлые выходные, мы с Николаем отправились в Манхэттен. Я хотела прокатить его на поезде и пароме, поэтому дорога у нас заняла почти полтора часа в каждую сторону. Я очень волновалась, сможет ли он это все выдержать, поэтому готовилась заранее и продумывала каждый шаг. Но, несмотря на мои переживания, съездили мы отлично. Николаю очень понравился поезд, он сидел на стуле и раскачивался в такт. На пароме он смотрел в окно, не оторвать. Ну, а когда мы доехали до Battery Park, в Downtowne, я выпустила его гонять и он был абсолютно счастлив. Вот как мы собирались в поездку:

Bath Time: Best Mold Free Bath Toys

Nicky's favorite time of the day is bath time. Since he was three weeks old, I put him in water and let him float, swim, dive and splash around. It has helped him greatly in developing neck control and balance, learning to crawl and stand up, as well as hold his breath under water and respond to commands. I've even posted a video of him diving on his own when he was six months old.

One thing we've struggled with, however, is finding the right toys for our bath.

One day, I noticed black stuff coming out of his squirt toys. Upon looking closer, I realized, with much disgust, that his favorite toys were full of mold!!! Since then, we stopped buying any type of squirt toys (with a hole on the bottom). Here are some fun toys we've discovered that are mold-free:

Это очень помогло ему в развитии - он быстро научился держать голову, садиться, вставать, а так же следовать командам и задерживать дыхание. Я даже выкладывала видео, как он сам ныряет когда ему было пол годика. Но вот одна трудность у нас была - найти хорошие игрушки для купания. Однажды, я заметила какую-то черную гадость в ванной - оказалось, что в его любимых игрушках образовалась плесень т.к. в них набиралась вода. С тех пор, игрушки для купания мы тщательно выбираем и покупаем только те, что без дырочек. Наверху я выложила несколько из тех, что нам нравятся больше всего.

How to get kids to play in their room - Holiday Toy Guide

EN: From time to time, I catch Nicky going very quiet... I would be in the kitchen prepping dinner, and then, all of a sudden - silence! Any mom knows silence means trouble!!! So I'd start calling his name, looking for him, preparing to see a giant mess, only to find him in his room, totally preoccupied. He'd give me one of his signature "I am busy, you may go now" looks and I would back away into the kitchen, feeling dumbfounded. Because he's only One! Does he know he's only one?! What can he possibly be doing in there that is keeping him so busy?

RU: Иногда я готовлю ужин и понимаю что в доме вдруг стало очень тихо. Любая мама знает - если тихо - беда! Я начинаю звать Николая, искать, ожидая увидеть очередной беспорядок, а вместо этого нахожу это чудо в его комнате, занятого игрушками. При этом он смотрит на меня выразительно, мол "иди, мам, по своим делам, не мешай", и я ухожу, в шоке от того, что он самостоятельно занят!!! Ведь ему всего годик!

He's One!

EN: Last night I nursed my infant for the last time. I gave him a bath and wrapped him in his green froggy towel. I sang him a song, read him a book and gave him a million kisses before putting him down in his crib. I told him I love him and crept out of his room. Quietly, I shut the door. Sank to the floor in the hallway. And wept silently.

This morning when he wakes up he will be One years old. I will give him a million kisses, hug him tightly and sing him a silly good morning song. I will cuddle him and tickle him. It will be like every other morning except it won't be. I will nurse him while laying in bed as always. But he won't be an infant anymore. He will be a rambunctious and strong-willed toddler. It will be a new day and a beginning of a new chapter for us. 

This year went by too quickly. I already miss the tiny little human being placed in my arms a year ago in the hospital. I miss his first smile, his first grasp, his first steps. We have so much more ahead of us. But so much is now behind us. My sweet little boy has turned one years old. I'm so proud of him. I'm so blessed to have him. And I cannot wait to see what the next year will bring!



RU: Вчера вечером, я покормила своего малыша перед сном. Я искупала его и завернула в зеленое полотенце с капюшоном в форме лягушки. Я спела ему песенку, прочитала книжку и тысячу раз поцеловала перед тем как положить в кроватку. Я сказала ему, что люблю его, пожелала спокойной ночи и тихонечко вышла из комнаты. Еле слышно притворила дверь. Села на пол в коридоре. И разревелась.

Сегодня утром, когда он проснется, ему будет Годик. Я снова его зацелую, крепко обниму и спою ему песенку о добром утре. я залезу с ним в кровать и буду его щекотать пока он кушает, буду слушать как он смеется и балдеть от счастья. Это будет самое обычно утро. Но оно будет совсем другое. Он больше не будет младенцем, теперь ему годик. Сегодня начнется новая глава в нашей с ним жизни.

Год пролетел нереально быстро. Вроде совсем недавно мне на грудь положили комочек человеческого счастья, и вот он уже бегает. Первая улыбка. Первые шажки. Первое "мама". Все это останется в том году. Я буду очень скучать за этими днями. И с нетерпением жду что будет дальше :)

EN: My stroller is my best friend. Every day, rain, sun, wind or snow, I take it for a walk - to the park, to the store, to the beach, on the bus, up the stairs, down the street and everywhere in between. Since I don't drive, I rely on it fully to get Nicky and I around and it hasn't failed us yet.

RU: Мы с моей коляской - лучшие подруги. Каждый день вместе, ходим за ручку. В любую погоду - солнце, снег, ветер или дождь - ведем Николая на прогулку. 7 Months: Favorite Toys

EN: It's a true blessing when you baby is healthy, happy and is surrounded with toys and love! As I watch Nicky play, I am not only infinitely intrigued by the progress he is making, but can't help but beam with joy over how happy he is in the play areas we have created for him. At almost 7 months, he is quite mobile and energetic, and can spend a long time in his room or pack'n'play engrossed in an activity all on his own. A few days ago, I left him in his room for a few minutes to get the mail, only to return and find him so busy with his toys that he didn't even notice that I left or came back!

In this post, here are some of our favorite toys for 6 to 9 months old babies.

RU: Здоровый, счастливый ребенок, радостно играющий с кучей игрушек - вот все, о чем мечтает каждая мама. Я могу часами наблюдать, как Николай возится со своими игрушками, ползает по комнате, разбрасывая кубики и мячики и вытаскивая коробки из под кровати. Это так здорово, что у него есть свое пространство и ему там радостно и комфортно. Теперь, когда ему уже почту 7 месяцев, он стал ужасно подвижным и энергичным. Если раньше игрушки были чем-то недосягаемым и непонятным, то теперь он их хорошо видит, может дотянуться, а если не может - то подползет и уже тогда точно схватит! Недавно я оставила его в комнате на пару минут когда принесли почту, и, когда вернулась, оказалось, что он на столько занят, что вообще не заметил ни как я ушла, ни как вернулась! У него теперь свои, очень важные, дела!

EN: Long gone are the days of the activity mat. I set it up for Nicky last week, he crawled up to it, looked it over, then turned to me like "Mom, you are funny" :)) 

I remember writing in the beginning of this year about how wonderful these things are. A newborn can spend his whole wake time on his back trying to grasp the toys over his head. Then, at around 3-4 months, it stops working. Instead of laying on his back, Nicky would roll over and try to bite the mat. Little did I know, that's when the calm, peaceful days came to an end for me.  Now, the whole floor is a playmat! 

RU: Когда-то давно я писала об игровом коврике, на котором Николай мог лежать и лежать когда был совсем маленький. Я тогда не знала, но это было счастливое, беззаботное время для меня!! Недавно, я достала этот коврик и положила посреди комнаты. Николай подполз к нему, попробовал его на зуб, подергал висящие над ним игрушки, потом повернулся и посмотрел на меня - "Мам, ты что, смеешься?"))) И пополз дальше по своим делам. Ему не нужен теперь коврик. У него теперь есть целый пол!

Little Virtuoso Baby Music Center

EN: We have upgraded from the Kick N Play Piano to this Music Center. It comes with a full octave that plays actual notes, a live mic, removable guitar and trumpet (for rattling and teething), can be layed flat on the floor (as shown) or put on legs (to practice standing). For older children, it comes with notes that are spelled out in letters, so they can play songs by pressing the right letter on the keyboard (10 songs included!). Even though it is intended for children 9 months to 3 years, Nicky already loves playing with it and can spend a long time banging on the keys and listening to the different sounds they make. 

RU: На смену нашему пианино, по которому Николай мог стучать ногами, мы купили уже более "взрослое" - с полной октавой нот, "живым" микрофоном, и погремушками в форме гитары и трубы. Когда он станет по-страше, его можно будет поставить на ножки и играть по нотам, которые подписаны буквам. Пианино подходит для деток от 9 месяцев до 3ех лет, но даже сейчас нашему мальчику очень нравится стучать по клавишам и трещать погремушками. Надеюсь, эта вещь прослужит нам долго!

Infantino Activity Stacker & Melissa & Doug Press N Go Inchworm

EN: I did some bargain hunting at TJ Maxx and picked up these two great toys. The Infantino Activity Stacker comes with 5 different rings with various textures. They are great for teething; he loves taking it apart, but haven't figured out how to put it back together yet. The center of the toy squeaks so he loves taking off all the rings and banging on it.

Melissa & Doug Inchworm has intrigued both the baby and our cat. The toys requires no batteries and moves forward simply by pressing down on it. It's great for beginner crawlers.

RU: Две игрушки, которые легко займут Николая на пол часа - это гусеница Melissa & Doug, которая едет без батареек (на нее просто нужно надавить сверху) и мягкая пирамидка Infantino с пятью кольцами из разных материалов. Их можно грызть, разбрасывать по комнате, снимать и надевать на основание. А за гусеницей можно ползать по всей комнете. Отличные игрушки для этого возраста!

Bright Starts Jungle Fun Ball Climber

EN: One day, Daddy came home with a big box. I thought it was one of those ball ramps where you drop the ball and it rolls down and comes out on the bottom, but this toy is far more advanced. The ball is placed on the top, it falls off the toy, bounces off the platform into the mouth of the hippo. This sets off a motor, which pulls the ball into the rotating spiral and carries it back to the top. This whole thing is so unique and fascinating that both Nicky and I couldn't get enough of it for the first few days. Well done, Daddy! :)

RU: В один прикрасных вечер, наш папа пришел домой с большой коробкой. В ней оказалась классная игрушка, перед которой мы с ребенком первые пару дней сидели как завороженные. Работает это так - кладешь сверху мячик. Он скатывается под небольшим уклоном и падает вниз, ударяется об желтую платформу и попадает в пасть к носорогу. Там он падает на кнопочку, которая активирует моторчик и начинает вращаться каруселька, по которой этот мячик едет наверх, оттуда опять скатывается и падает на платформу. На это можно смотреть до бесконечности! Молодец, папа!

EN: Summer is right around the corner and we are spending more and more time outdoors. One morning after a full day in the park Nicky woke with red cheeks and after a frantic call to a doctor I realized my baby had sunburn. So, to keep his milky-white skin safe, we got a UV Play Shade which pops up in no times and folds into a small circle for easy transport. We now take it with us for picnics and beach days and Nicky loves playing, snacking and napping in it!

RU: Пришло лето и мы стали по пол дня проводить на улице. Однажды утром Николай проснулся с красными щечками, и после того как я разбудила нашего педиатра, мне объяснили что ребенок сгорел. Теперь мы усердно мажемся кремами от загара, а так же купили палатку со специальным защитным покрытием, которое не пропускает опасные солнечные лучи. Палатка раскладывается за минуту и без особых усилий компактно складывается так, что ее легко можно носить с собой. Мы берем ее в парк и на пляж, а иногда просто ставим перед домом. Николаю нравится в ней играть, и он даже изредка соглашается там вздремнуть.

EN: Another pyramid that caught my eye because of how different it is. No matter how you stack the egg shaped pieces, it stays put. I love stacking it and Nicky loves tumbling it down and teething on the pieces.

RU: Эта необычная пирамидка сразу бросилась мне в глаза. Она стоит под любым, самым причудливым углом! Я ее с удовольствием выстраиваю, а Николай - так же радостно ломает и грызет. Думаю, через пару месяцев ему будет с ней гораздо интересней когда он сможет сам ставить одну часть на другую.

Munchkin Fresh Food Feeder & Baby Banana Bendable Toothbrush

EN: Speaking of teething. In the last 5 weeks we got 6 teeth! Nicky is the master of teething! We have more silicone rings and rubbery toys in our house than a baby section at a drugstore. Two of our favorites are Munchkin Feeder with a slice of apple inside and the Baby Banana Toothbrush. We also received recommendations to try a silicone feeder and Sophie La Girafe (more teething toys to add to our collection :).

A little trick my mom taught me was to tie his teething toys to the stroller so I don't have to constantly pick them up off the ground and rinse them off ;)

RU: За последний месяц у нас прорезалось 6 зубов! Мы неустанно грызем все, что плохо лежит. Дома уже целая коллекция деревянных колечек, силиконовых погремушек и резиновых игрушек. Самые любимые - зубная щеточка в форме банана которая массажирует десна, и ниблер, в который положили кусочек яблочка. Так же нам посоветовали резиновую Жирафу Sophie и ниблер из силикона, которые мы скоро добавим в нашу коллекцию аксессуаров для юного грызуна :)

Маме спасибо за мудрый совет - я привязала игрушки ленточками к коляске, чтобы каждый раз не поднимать с пола то, что Николаю надоело грызть. Прогулки стали гораздо приятней ;)

Newborn Parenting Nightmares that End by 6 Months

EN: Nicholas is 6 months old today!!! I can't quite process this fact. The time went by too quickly. He's got three teeth, he sits, he stands, he crawls, he reaches for everything, he is curious about the whole world and he's a totally different baby than he was just a few months ago.

When you have a newborn, you are sleep-deprived and clueless. As you try to figure out this new world you've landed yourself in, everyone will tell you it will get better soon. They just don't say how soon, exactly. 

While some issues go away on their own, others you will have to work on. And, as you hold a crying newborn in your arms for three hours without being able to put him or her to sleep, remember - this is the most precious time you get with your baby. These are the easy days! Your job as a parent will only get more difficult as they get older (everyone told me this but I didn't believe it until Nicky became mobile!)

Here are some things that will get easier and change by the time the baby is half a year old.

Best Toys for an Infant

EN: Nicky is almost five months old now and is a very active and curious little boy. He loves watching things, grabbing on to everything within his reach, standing, sitting and even attempting to take steps. However, mommy has to work during the day, so I have to come up with ways to entertain him in order to get stuff done.

Unfortunately, there aren't too many toys and activities available for such young babies. Aside from mobiles and floor gyms, there aren't too many options. Most toys are labeled 6 months and up. As if babies younger than that just lay on their backs all day and stare up at the ceiling! Well, we do a lot more than just that! Here are some of the toys and activities to occupy our day.

For busy moms like me, I labeled most toys here with recommended age and length they can keep the baby occupied (attention span) - based on our experience.

RU: Николаю Степановичу уже почти 5 месяцев. Он очень подвижный, активный, ему все интересно, все хочется потрогать и попробовать на вкус. Ему нравится сидеть, стоять и он даже пытается делать первые шажки. Я бы рада играть с ним весь день, но мне нужно работать и приходится придумывать, чем бы его занять.

На удивление, в Америке не так много игрушек для совсем маленьких. Кроме коврика, о котором я писала раньше, и каруселек на кроватку выбор не велик. В основном игрушки продаются для деток от 6 месяцев. Можно подумать, до этого возраста малыши только и делают что лежат на спине и смотрят вверх. А мы с Николаем делаем так много всего! 

Расскажу Вам немного о нашем дне и наших игрушках. Для удобства, буду писать с какого возраста мы стали пользоваться каждой вещью и на сколько она может занять ребенка, исходя из нашего опыта.

EN: I have very little patience. I couldn't wait to get out of high school. Couldn't wait to start working in the real world. Couldn't wait to move out of my parents' house. It drives me crazy to inertly wait for things to take place. I must be actively involved in everything.

When my son was born, I started buying him all kinds of developmental books and toys. Than I realized that he had no use for them yet. He had no use of his hands yet!! :) There was nothing I can do to make him learn faster. At best, I could create a stimulating environment and watch and wait. 

Certain things we did, like swimming and baby exercises helped his motor skills. Talking to the baby, reading, tummy time, all these things are wonderful, but most milestones occur when baby is ready and there isn't much you can or should do to influence that. 

However, last week Nicky learned to flip over and now he's attempting to crawl. I watch him with a mix of pride and fear because I am not ready for him to become mobile and independent. As much as I have been waiting for him to learn to sit, stand and walk, I am scared of it just as well.

This year, I cannot wait for winter to be over. I am so tired of bulky warm clothes so I bought this bright yellow coat, and, of course, froze my butt in it in the freezing New York weather. Now I am accepting that parenthood requires infinite amounts of patience and that I shouldn't rush things. A few more days in Sorel boots won't kill me, and when winter is over and it's time to put all the warm gear away, my baby no longer be a newborn. I am savoring every day I have of him being little, and researching baby proofing. Soon, it will be warm and Nicky will be on the move!

RU: Я очень нетерпеливых человек. Мне не сиделось в школе. Я рвалась во взрослую жизнь. Торопилась замуж. Не могу сидеть на месте и ждать чтоб что-то случилось. Мне надо во всем активно участвовать и подгонять события.

Когда Николай родился, я понакупала ему всяких развивающих книжек и игрушек и все ждала когда он начнет с ними играться. Я совала ему всякие погремушки и кубики, а он все никак ручки свои не мог найти. С трудом я смерилась с тем, что нужно "остыть" и дать ему развиваться своими темпами. Плаванье, чтение, зарядка, интерактивные игрушки - все это здорово, но ребенок сам решает когда и что он будет делать, и нет смысла его торопить.

Но вот недавно подхожу к манежу, а он уже на животике! Только что лежал на спинке, поднял ножки и раз - перевернулся!! Как же я обрадовалась! Ведь ему уже почти 4 месяца, а он все никак не хотел переворачиваться. Но сразу после чувства гордости на меня напала паника - а ведь скоро он сядет. И поползет. А у нас кошка. У нее песок. Он же станет его есть!! Что делать??!!! Нужно срочно купить решетки и все огородить. И крышки на розетки. И намордник на кошку... 

Плохо у меня с терпением. Всегда очень жду чего-то, а потом сама не знаю что с этим делать. Очень жду весну. Надоел мне холод, и я решила купить желтенькое, веселенькое пальто. И вот оно приехало, я радостно напялила его... и замерзла :)) Ведь в Нью Йорке по прежнему минусовые температуры и ледяной ветер.

В общем, я смерилась с тем, что все должно идти своим чередом. Придётся еще немного походить в зимней одежде. А игрушки и книжки будут пока ждать своей очереди на полках. Не стоит торопить события. Ведь детки так быстро растут, что нужно успевать наслаждаться каждым днем!

EN: I know this is a bit late in the season, but being a new mommy I find myself constantly running behind these day. If, like me, you have been putting off (or completely forgetting) to create a wish list for your baby for the holidays or still can't find the right gift for a little one, here are some ideas to help you out! Better late than never :)

EN: Black & White Baby Books: I'm a huge bookworm and it's one of the things I am adamant about passing on to my son. I wanted to introduce him to books as early as possible so that he will always have them in his life. Black and white books are made for infants to accommodate their limited vision - they feature black and white shapes which are easy for little eyes to follow. We have "read" a book called Black and White by Tana Hoban (who has a whole line up of infant books) and now want to try out Baby Animals Black and White by Phyllis Tildes.

RU: Черно-белые Детские Книги: Я не представляю жизни без книг и очень хочу поделиться этим пристрастием со своим сыном. Поэтому знакомство с книгами у нас началось, в полном смысле, с пеленок.  Черно-белые книги специально сделаны для младенцев, чьи глаза еще плохо различают цвета, зато уже могут видеть белые формы на черном фоне, и наоборот. Мы уже "прочитали " книгу Tana Hoban "Black and White" (у этого автора есть целая линейка книг для младенцев), и теперь ждем следующую, с черно-белыми  зверюшками от Phyllis Tildes.

EN: Baby Floor Gym: There are only so many things you can do with a baby in his first months of life. Babies eat, sleep, pee and poop. But for the times they are awake there are a few things you can do to help them develop. Floor gym is a perfect place for you and baby to interact while working on their hand-eye coordination and head balance. It is perfect for tummy time, encourage baby to reach for things and explore their hands and is a lot of fun for both of you. Nicky has a Baby Einstein Floor Gym and he loves it! For Christmas, we are also looking to get him a Fisher Price Piano Gym or a Kick and Play Piano.

RU: Baby Floor Gym: Я постоянно переживаю что не достаточно занимаюсь ребенком.  Но в его 6 недель все что он делает - это ест, спит и наполняет подгузники. Поэтому я старательно ищу подходящие его возрасту занятия для тех нескольких часов между сном и кормлением которые мы можем провести вместе. Baby gym - самое подходящее развлечение для нас. Он помогает развивать шею, тянуться ручками к висящим над ребенком игрушками, и просто нравится Николаю Степановичу (у нас Baby Einstein Floor Gym). Там можно и на животике полежать, и в зеркало посмотреть,  и маме поулыбаться :) На Новый Год мы попросили у Деда Мороза еще один gym, с пианино от Fisher Price по которому можно стучать маленькими ножками.

EN: Baby Vac Nasal Aspirator - a friend messaged me with so much excitement about this device. It sucks out boogies :) She told me she couldn't believe how much mucus her son had up there. So she got me curious. I want to try it out too now :)) It helps baby breath easier and will certainly come in handy throughout the winter months.

Humidifier - This is another item that will help not only the baby, but the whole family breath better. Before the baby was born, we purchased a humidity & temperature measuring tool and I kept an eye on it as the winter months crept up. As the heat went on in the apartment, humidity level began to drop. It is recommended to keep it between 50 and 70% for the baby to sleep well at night, but in our home it measured in the 30s. We purchased Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier which brought the humidity up to 50s and it has helped us all sleep better.

RU: Аспиратор для носа - подруга написала мне недавно с таким восторгом! - они купили эту штуку для маленьких носиков и она не могла поверить сколько всего удалось высосать из ее сына :)) Я решила что нам такое тоже надо, интересно же!))

Увлажнитель воздуха - эта штука помогает всей семье спать по ночам. Перед рождением малыша я купила градусник который измеряет не только температуру воздуха в помещении, но и влажность. Когда наступили холода и включилось отопление,  оказалось что влажность у нас дома слишком низкая -30% вместо 50% или выше. Я купила увлажнитель воздуха Vicks, и теперь все спят гораздо лучше!

EN: Gobbi Mobile - I've discovered my baby absolutely loves mobiles! He stares up at them and they help him fall asleep. For Christmas, I want to experiment with a Gobbi mobile, which, according to the school of development by Montessori, should be introduced to babies around 6 weeks of age. It helps develop eye sight and encourages focus and concentration. It is a mobile with 5 balls in different shades of one color. They can be purchased on Etsy or made yourself.

RU: Каруселька Гобби - Николаю очень нравятся карусельки которые вешают над кроваткой. Он лежит, разглядывает, слушает песенки,  и иногда даже засыпает :) Согласно школе развития Монтессори, такие карусельки очень полезны для маленьких и их стоит менять регулярно чтобы малышу было интересно. В возрасте 6 недель Монтессори рекомендует карусели Гобби - 5 шариков одного цвета, но разных оттенков и, желательно, разных текстур. Гобби помогает развивать зрение, фокусирование и концентрацию. Такие карусельки можно купить на Etsy или сделать самому.

EN: Baby Bjorn BabySitter Balance - this is something I spied at a friend's house. It is a bouncy chair which is baby-operated - it rocks when baby moves, so not only does it sooth him, but it also provides a work out for the little one which wears him down. We currently have a Fisher Price swing which plugs into an outlet and also rocks the baby to sleep (and does a great job at it!), but I like the idea of the baby powering the swing himself. My friend's four months old seemed to love this BabySitter very much and I think Nicholas would enjoy it too!

RU: Baby Bjorn BabySitter Balance - Эту штуку я подглядела у подруги. BabySitter - это стульчик который укачивает ребенка. Но, в отличии от других подобных качалок, этот качается когда ребенок двигается. Он помогает уложить малыша спать потому что ребенок не только засыпает от качания, но и устанет сам его качать и уснет еще быстрее. Сейчас мы пользуемся качелькой от Fisher Price - ее можно включить в розетку и она качает малыша и поёт песенки, но мне нравится идея BabySitter потому что она дает ребенку физическую нагрузку. Малышу моей подруги сейчас 4 месяца и ему очень нравится этот стульчик. Мне кажется что Николаю он бы тоже пришелся по душе!

EN: Melissa & Doug Toys - one of my favorite brand for toys is Melissa & Doug. If you are at a loss on what to get as a gift - go with this brand :) It offers a wide selection of wooden developmental toys for children of all ages. We are slowly accumulating them, thanks to Grandma and Grandpa :) These are a few of the ones that we already have, now I just have to wait for Nicky to be old enough to enjoy them!

RU: Игрушки Melissa & Doug - одна из моих любимых фирм игрушек. Если Вы не знаете что купить ребенку - смело покупайте товары этой марки. Melissa & Doug делает деревянные игрушки для всех возрастов которые способствуют развитию и мышлению.  Благодаря бабушке и дедушке они постепенно заполняют нашу детскую. Теперь осталось только дождаться когда Николай подрастет немножко чтобы играть с ними!

EN: Fred's Swim Academy - One thing that is crucial for a child's development is learning how to swim. It helps them strengthen their muscles, develop life-saving instincts, learn a valuable skill and get acquainted with water. The earlier you start, the better. From 5 weeks old, I fill up a full-size tub for Nicky, lay him on my hand and allow him to float. He enjoys this a lot more than a bath in a kid-size Whale tub we originally got for him. In fact, the first time we tried it he was so relaxed he started to fall asleep! I want to continue his swimming lessons by introducing the Fred's Swim Academy Swim Trainer, which is a blow up raft designed to teach babies how to swim. It supports their head while positioning them at the right angle to enjoy water naturally. Babies are born with an instinct to wiggle their arms and legs when placed in water - they are born swimmers. It is important to foster this instinct before they are 3 months old or it may fade away. That's why the Swim Trainer is a great idea. I am looking forward to introducing this vest to Nicky's bath time soon!

RU: Круг для плаванья Fred's Swim Academy - Очень важно научить ребенка плавать, и чем раньше начать - тем лучше. У новорожденных есть инстинкт - если их положить в воду они автоматически начинают двигать ножками и ручками чтобы удержатся на плаву. А если их опустить под воду - они инстинктивно задерживают дыхание. Эти инстинкты важно поддержать и развить до 3 месяцев, иначе они могут исчезнуть. С 5 недель мы забросили детскую ванночку в форме кита которая мне так нравилась по началу. Теперь мы набираем "взрослую" ванную, я кладу Николая Степановича на спинку, держу головку и он лежит на воде. Ему это нравится гораздо больше чем сидеть в детской ванночке; первый раз когда я попробовала с ним так поплавать он даже стал засыпать в воде! Теперь я хочу попробовать круг Fred's Swim Academy который учит малышей плавать - он держит их головку и помогает лечь на воду под правильным углом. Со следующего года мы обязательно его опробуем!

EN: Balaclava Hat - My husband and I constantly argue about this - I keep putting hats on our son and he keeps telling me to take them off (he thinks Nicky looks silly in them.) However, in the winter months, baby must wear a hat! (No one wants to spend sleepless nights with a wailing child because of an ear infection.) I found it very hard to buy hats that will stay put on a squirming baby. Most fall off within minutes and I was only able to find two that would tie under the baby's chin and cover his ears well - one from Carters and one from Amazon. To remedy the situation,  my mom knitted us one. However, on my search for the perfect hat, I came across Balaclavas for baby. These hats are one-piece that go over the baby's head and neck, cover his ears and forehead, keep him warm and protect him from wind. Since we go on daily strolls for at least an hour at a time, this will definitely come in handy for us!

RU: Шапки Балаклава - Мы с мужем  постоянно спорим по поводу головных уборов - я одеваю шапочки на Николая Степановича,  а он их снимает.  Говорит что ребенок в них глупо выглядит. Но малыш должен быть в шапке зимой т.к. с больными ушами сидеть никто не хочет. В Америке оказалось сложно найти шапку с ушками,  да такую чтоб завязывалась и не слетала. Одну я нашла в Carters, другую на Amazon, а третью нам связала бабушка. А пока я их искала, наткнулась на Балаклаву - это шапочка цельная, закрывает и лоб, и уши и шею, и вот она уж точно не слетит. Мы с Николаем гуляем каждый день на свежем воздухе по часу, так что она нам на следующей год очень пригодится!

EN: Diapers - If you are ever at a loss to what to get a new mommy, just buy diapers. Babies seem to go through them at a lightening speed. (You need about ten a day!) We use Pampers Swaddlers in size 2. I've learned this month that it's best to buy a bigger size if you aren't sure which one your baby will need to avoid a messy explosion and a frantic run to the laundromat.

RU: Подгузники - Если вы совсем не можете придумать что подарить семье с новорожденным - дарите подгузники.  Они лишними никогда не бывают - за день уходит штук десять. Мы пользуемся Pampers Swaddlers и перешли сейчас на 2ой размер. Я теперь знаю что лучше чтоб подгузник был чуть больше,  иначе придется постоянно все застирывать.

EN: Amazon Parents membership - If you noticed, a lot of the items I recommended are from Amazon. This mega-online-retailer has been a huge life-saver (and money drainer) for me in the last few weeks. I am an Amazon Parent, which is a yearly membership that gives me free 2-day shipping (including Sunday delivery on many items!), discounts on diapers and wipes, and free movies to watch. I buy many household items, clothes, and lots of baby gear there because it is fast, reliable, offers competitive pricing and saves me time and a trip to the store. Whenever I come across a product someone recommends, I look it up on Amazon (often via their phone app, sometimes while feeding Nicky at 3 am :) to read more about it and see the reviews. I have discovered many great items this way such as Miracle Blankets, Earth Mama products, WubbaNub pacifiers and many more. If you want to give a great gift for an expecting family or any mom with a child, Amazon Mom yearly membership is a fantastic present!

Это мега - онлайн - ритейлер который одновременно и выручает меня, и съедает все мои деньги. Я - Amazon Parent; это - программа которая , которая дает мне бесплатную двух - дневную доставку, скидки на подгузники, и бесплатные фильмы который можно смотреть online. Я покупаю там товары для дома, для малыша, одежду, и многое другое потому что это удобно,  быстро и надежно.  Гораздо проще заказать что то в интернете чем бегать по магазинам с маленьким ребенком. Теперь каждый раз когда я нахожу какую-то новую вещь в интернете или по рекомендации подруг, я ищу ее на  Amazonе, читаю отзывы и чаще всего заказываю там с помощью приложения для телефона. (Иногда это происходит в 3 часа ночи, одной рукой,  пока я кормлю Ники :) Таким образом я нашла много интересных вещей,  например, Miracle Blankets, товары фирмы Earth Mama, пустышки WubbaNub, о которых я писала в предыдущем посте.  В общем, годовая подписка на Amazon Mom - это отличный подарок для любой мамочки!
